For any girl who loves fashion, you know a hat is a must have. Not only a good hat can cover you from the sun, but also it really brings up the outfit and makes you look dressy. I have all sorts of hats at home, but this wool safari hat is my favorite. (I have searched all over the internet for the name of this kind of hat, I conclude it’s a Safari hat, not a Fedora)
I made a terrible mistake when I washed my wool hat with water. I didn’t know what I was thinking. I just had no experiences with taking care of wool hat. I just thought I would wash some dirty spots, the shape was completely ruined by the water. I was a little bit heartbroken.
Not that it was a very expensive hat, I bought it from H&M I think, but I really liked it and it suited me well. I still wore it for a while after the incident, but it didn’t look as good as before. It was completely done when I took it with me for trekking in Nepal.
Looking back, this hat has gone through a lot with me. I took it with me on my cross country road trip last year. It definitely earned its name as a Safari hat. So it did me good services. I hope you learn from my lesson and take good care of your hat, now I need to get a replacement, RIP my old hat.
I made the same mistake with a pair of suede shoes before. I washed them with water. What I should do is to brush them instead of washing them. Good thing is that pair of shoes weren’t expensive either. They were from H&M. Thank H&M for good and affordable fashion and space to mess up, haha. Now I have two pairs of very expensive shoes, one is made of suede, the other is made of velvet. I would never wash them with water. LOL.
To take a step further, if you are wondering how you should clean your wool hat, here is the instruction I got from hatsinthebelfry.com.
Cleaning Fur Felt Hats & Wool Hats
Learning how to clean felt hats and wool hats is an important aspect of keeping your most expensive hats in tip-top shape. You’ll need a soft bristle brush and, in more extreme cases, a steam cleaner and powdered cleaners.
- To clean a fur felt hat or wool hat, brush the top and bottom counter-clockwise with a soft bristle brush.
- Set your hat on its top or hang from a peg or hat hook to help it retain its shape.
- If your hat gets wet, shake off all excess water, let dry, then lightly brush clean.
- Use steam to shape and clean hat. For heavy stains, powdered cleaners may be used.
So find your signature hat and take good care of it, it would be worth your time. Trust me.
